Recup: Hamburg's reusable coffee cup deposit and return scheme

Recup.jpg

In 2018, Munich-based Recup was selected to be the provider of standard coffee mugs to-go in Hamburg after the city issued a proposal for a standard deposit and return system. In the scheme, citizens can buy their coffee-to-go in a reusable cup, pay a deposit of EUR 1 and return the empty cups to any participating cafe in the city.

Currently, more than 60,000 cups are in circulation around Hamburg, with 229 participating cafes, shops and bakeries. Recup’s coffee cups can be rinsed over 500 times and can be recycled at the end of their life.
