Starting in September 2019, McDonald’s will remove plastic lids from all McFlurry options in the UK. McDonald’s will also be removing single-use plastics from its meals and salads from July 2019, which will be served in 100 per cent renewable and recyclable cardboard containers.

The changes are part of the company’s commitment to move towards sustainable packaging. McDonald’s has pledged to source all packaging from renewable or recycled sources by 2025.

Beth Hart, the Supply Chain Director of McDonald’s UK & Ireland, said: “Removing plastic lids from the McFlurry, and introducing new cardboard packaging for salads, will save nearly 500 metric tonnes of plastic a year. It’s the latest step in our sustainability journey.”
