UK grocer Sainsbury’s will be removing all plastic bags from its produce and bakery aisles by September 2020. Customers are also encouraged to bring their own reusable containers or purchase a 100 per cent reusable alternative.

The move comes as part of an initiative to cut down on plastic waste. The company will also be removing the plastic cutlery it currently offers in its cafes and checkouts with wooden alternatives.

Mike Coupe, Sainsbury’s chief executive, said: “Our customers expect us to be leading the way on major issues like this, so I am determined to remove and replace plastic packaging where we can and offer alternatives to plastic where packaging is still required to protect a product.”
