German Mitte getting ready to deliver mineral-enhanced smart home water systems

Berlin-based bottle brand Mitte, which ran a successful crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo a few months ago, raking in more than EUR 300,000, is working on a smart home water system that purifies and enhances water through a process inspired by natural water cycles. The system will purify water with a proprietary distillation-based method, then enhances it with essential minerals, using mineral cartridges.

Each cartridge will produce 400 liters of healthy water, enough to last around 3 months for a family of four. At a price of €40, €45, and €50 for mitte® Balance, Vitality, and Alkaline respectively, cost will come to between EUR 0.10 (USD 0.12) and EUR 0.13 (USD 0.15) per liter - cheaper than bottled water brands. Mitte also eliminates the need for plastic bottles, leading to a fundamental reduction in plastic waste, water waste, and carbon dioxide emissions.

Mitte is also addressing its own environmental impact: it will use bioplastics for its mineral cartridges, and will set up a circular system, in which users send back their used cartridges. The company is also partnering with international nonprofit Water.org, donating money for each liter of water consumed by a Mitte customer.

Bringo's take: smart water home systems that save consumers money, reduce the use of single use plastic bottles (and the unnecessary carbon-fueled shipping of bottled water around the world), and add a health element (in the form or vitamins or minerals) are an integral and exciting part of a single-use free world. We'll be monitoring and covering these start-ups with great interest!
