Maharashtra bans plastic bags and single-use plastic items
The state cabinet of Maharashtra, India has slapped a ban on single-use plastics, with the exception of plastic bottles and where plastics are used for medicinal or agricultural purposes. The cabinet issued a state-wide notification on March 23rd prohibiting the manufacture, usage, sale, storage and transport of products made from plastic effective immediately.
Producers, distributors, and vendors of plastic have been given one month to reach compliance, while the state’s environmental department has announced a mandatory buyback deposit scheme for plastic bottles and milk bags, which came into full effect on March 29, to encourage reuse and recycling of plastics still in rotation.
