Initiative to ban plastic straws, bags and micro beads headed for Senate in Brazil
About time: one of the most populous nations on earth has put single-use plastics on its legislative agenda.
It took a citizen's initiative, though; using Brazil's Federal Senate e-citzenship page (where any Brazilian citizen can suggest a new law or an existing law's alteration), Rodrigo de Paula Oliveira recently initiated a movement for a legislative proposal asking for the banning of the distribution of plastic straws, bags and micro beads (in cosmetics) in Brazil.
In less than 30 days he garnered the support of more than 20,000 citizens, meaning the proposal will now come up for a vote in the Senate. One to closely watch! Tip of the hat to Luciana Stein, Bringo's Brazilian Associate.
