Starbucks UK trials takeaway cup charge in attempt to cut plastic waste

Starbucks have become the first UK coffee chain to trial a “latte levy” - charging extra for its disposable, plastic-lined coffee cups.

In a three-month trial, anyone buying hot drinks in takeaway cups from 35 selected London stores will have to pay an extra 5 pence.

The proceeds will go to environmental charity Hubbub who will track the impact of this initiative on buying behaviour, as Starbucks hope to encourage their customers to switch to reusable cups (which they have made readily available to purchase in-store, since 2014). More at The Guardian.
