Latvia adopts a ban on plastic bags

The Latvian Parliament announced an amendment to its packaging law that will ban the free handout of plastic bags at retail shops. The law comes into effect on 1st January 2019 and applies to all types of plastic shopping bags. The law marks one exception for bags below 15 microns, which are used for hygienic purposes, but it will require the retailer to inform the customer about the alternative packaging materials available.
