New York bans single-use foam containers and fill packaging

New York City’s Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has imposed a ban on single-use foam containers and common fill packaging known as ‘packing peanuts’. The ban came into effect on the 1st of January 2019 and includes non-recyclable single-use foam products like takeout clamshells, cups, bowls, plates and trays among others. Small businesses and organisations with less than $500,000 in gross income have been allowed to apply for ‘hardship exemptions’ from the Department of Small Business Services and been provided with a 6 month grace period before fines come into effect.
